1. The process of loosening the surface of the groun in preparation for seeding, sprigging or sodding; sometimes performed on subsoil before the installation of topsoil to promote the drainage of water downward between layers; term is also used to descrive the chemical or mechanical scratching of the seed coat (typical of zoysiagrass) to improve germination.
