Lamiaceae (Labiatae)


Plants in the Lamiaceae or mint family are annual or perennial herbs but some are shrubs, small trees, or vines. The flowers have 5 fused petals that will diverge into 2 lips (bilabiate). The four nutlet fruits are produced from a four lobed, superior ovary with a style that is borne between the ovary lobes and attached at the base of the flower (gynobastic style)Other characters include:

  • stems are square or angled
  • usually opposite leaves
  • aromatic oils that account for characteristic odors

Examples include sage (Salvia, thyme (Thymus), basil (Occimum) and oregano (Origanum) and the following:
