Acer saccharum
Sugar Maple
Tremendous variation exists in the color and texture of Sugar Maple bark, due to its genetic diversity over a wide geographic area of North America, although morphologically different trees can be seen side-by-side in the same forest. Although mature Suggar Maple bark is usually brown or brown-gray with prominent longitudinal fissures and flares, some forms are black-barked, while others have a strikingly different texture, being scaly and platy with an orange interior bark (as shown here).
