Black Maple is often difficult to distinguish from Sugar Maple, but its foliage offers the best immediate clue in Summer. The leaves have lateral lobes that droop as they hang from the twigs, have few or no incisions on the lobes, have their two basal lobes significantly diminished in size, and have prominent stipules at the base of the petioles (these may absisce as the season progresses).
