The long, stiff, pendulous capsules of Northern Catalpa also give this tree the alternative name of Cigar Tree, usually persisting throughout the Winter and dehiscing in Spring, releasing the fringed seeds and creating an additional maintenance chore with the dried fruit cleanup.
