The smooth bark of American Hornbeam becomes fluted (also termed sinewy, defining the rounded longitudinal or twisting ridges) with increasing trunk diameter, and provides an outstanding ornamental feature year-round. Its distinctive blue-gray color gives this tree the alternative common name of Blue Beech, and its muscular texture and heavy wood give rise to the common names of Musclewood and Ironwood.
