Betula nigra
River Birch

What makes members of the Birch Family aesthetically pleasing near bodies of water is not so much their ornamental bark, Winter catkins, or graceful symmetry, but rather their shimmering leaves, primarily a function of their wide leaf bases that catch the breeze. Representative genera include the Alders, Birches, and Aspens.
