The leaves of Japanese Zelkova (elliptical, serrated, and alternate) often have outstanding fall color, and the heavily lenticeled branches develop into multicolored, flaky bark with age, both improvements as compared to American Elm, which this tree has sometimes replaced in modern landscapes.
