The several species of Ironweed constitute a wildflower treasure of the Eastern United States. Ironweed flowers late in the Summer on tall, sturdy stems, often in the company of Goldenrod when in dry soils, and usually as a partner to Joe-Pye Weed in moist soils. The extreme drought tolerance of Ironweed is due to its deep, fleshy taproot system.
