It is easy to see from this close-up image of the many small inflorescences of Ironweed why it is a member of the Aster Family, blooming at about the same time as most Asters. While this photo shows a bright lavendar-violet color to the ray flowers, in actuality they are a deep purple-blue, due to the artifact of photography without a blue filter.
