The thin, cinnamon-colored bark of Bald Cypress exfoliates in tightly-pressed vertical strips that are best observed at close range. This species usually does not have the sunken "armpits" underneath its branches as they attach to the trunk, that are characteristic of the closely related Dawn Redwood.
