The leaf of French Marigold is so deeply cut that it appears to be pinnately compound, but it is actually simple, having deep sinuses all the way to the midrib. The individual lobes have sparse but deep serrations that often terminate in a gland that gives the foliage its characteristic pungent scent when brushed against.
