The alternate leaves of the Stewartias have several interesting features. Like the Dogwoods, their major leaf veins are nearly parallel to the leaf margins, becoming reticulate at the outer edge. And like the Mockoranges, they have sparse and minute serrations on the leaf margins that point outward.
