Aesculus glabra
Ohio Buckeye

The abscised fruits of Ohio Buckeye often split apart upon hitting the ground, revealing one or two nuts within the husk. The fresh nut has a shiny dark brown surface, with a much lighter round region that supposedly resembles a "buck's eye". In lawn areas or urban settings, fruit litter may be a liability in terms of mowing or pedestrian traffic.
