European Elderberry has a number of variegated cultivars, but they are typically only hardy to zone 5 under optimum conditions. Fortunately, being grown only for their foliage, if nature does not prune them to the ground on an annual basis in winter, it is best to perform this chore in early spring anyway, as the best variegation occurs on juvenile growth.
