All broadleaf evergreens (including Catawba Rhododendron, as shown here) are optimally sited in areas that are shaded from the Winter sun and sheltered from the Winter winds, both of which may lead to foliage dessication, stem dieback, and even plant death when the ground is frozen for an extended period of time.
