An acorn from Swamp White Oak has a very long peduncle (fruiting stalk) and involucre (cap) that covers one-third of the nut. Mature acorns are often solitary but with an aborted and vestigial acorn along the peduncle (however, acorns may also occur as fully developed pairs from a single peduncle).
