While it is well known that deciduous trees display an alternative fall color before leaf abscission, it is not as well known that some evergreen trees drop their interior needles from a previous season's growth in Autumn (other evergreens do so in Spring, or in both Autumn and Spring). The best example is White Pine, which sometimes displays a vivid yellow fall color in its interior canopy (Flowering Dogwood is in the foreground in red fall color). |
