Switchgrass has inflorescences in late summer that are more open and "airy" than the popular Maiden Grasses that bloom at about the same time; however, in a group planting, the flowering of Switchgrass is quite noticeable above the uppermost foliage, transitioning from green to bronze to buff as the flowers age.
