One of the quickest ways to strongly suspect whether a mature deciduous conifer is either a Dawn Redwood or a Bald Cypress is to look at the attachment of the lower branches to the trunk; if they exhibit sunken "armpits" under the source of juncture, then chances are good that it is a Dawn Redwood.
