Star Magnolia is a commonly used foundation shrub or small tree, and possesses a very dense canopy of foliage and stems during the growing season, with individual branches creating mounds of foliage at maturity. Birds like dense foliage and twigs upon which they can temporarily alight, such as near a birdfeeder, and thus Star Magnolia is one of several good shrubs for this alternative usage in the landscape.
