The green to bronzed foliage of the various cultivars of Cardinal Flower is secondary to the flowers that appear in late Summer. This perennial strongly prefers permanently moist to occasionally wet sites in partial sun to partial shade, and its lodging at the time of bloom can be greatly diminished by shearing the plant back lightly in early Summer, to promote lateral branching before flowering occurs.
