Liquidambar styraciflua
Sweetgum

This golden-green inflorescence of Sweetgum is the staminate (male) flower, which is not especially ornamental and quickly abscises as the foliage is expanding in mid-Spring. The smaller female flower (not shown) gives rise to the spiny, globular fruit.
