Sweetgum is an alternative to Silver Maple in terms of a shade tree noted for its quick growth at new homesites; however, this approximately fifteen year old tree has about five years left before its owners consider cutting it down, due to the increasing quantity of pesky fruits that litter the lawn in Winter and make mowing and walking difficult the following season.
