The long leaves of Black Walnut are pinnately compound and attractive in early Summer, but create a liability from mid-Summer to early Autumn when found in urban settings, as they often exhibit continuous defoliation of leaflets and rachises in response to dry conditions. This, combined with fragments of the fruit husks, create stains on concrete walkways and automobiles in Summer and Autumn.
