The pinnately compound leaves of Black Walnut are often missing the terminal leaflet, giving them an even number of leaflets per leaf (14 in both of these leaves, with an overall length of up to two feet). When brushed against or crushed, the leaves give off a pungent odor, as do the green stems and immature fruits.
