Winterberry (shown here) is a deciduous holly that looks great in the Winter landscape, but needs acidic soils in order to thrive and not exhibit chlorotic foliage in Summer. Possumhaw (also known as Deciduous Holly, Ilex decidua) is more adaptable to alkaline soils , but does not have any compact cultivars more suitable for modern landscapes.
