The late winter canopy of many Red Maple cultivars is a combination of emerging red inflorescences, silvery branches, and an overall symmetrical branching habit that yields an upright oval to rounded outline. Like many shade trees, judicious thinning of the canopy every two to three years will eliminate crowded branching and allow more dappled sunlight to percolate through to the turfgrass below.
