Background is crucial for some plants that have outstanding ornamental features which are easily hidden. One such example is the Witchhazel hybrids, whose late Winter blossoms (yellow, orange, or red) do not have persistent foliage to hide the flowers, but who still need a dark background to highlight their presence. When viewed in front of the brick chimney, these flowers are almost lost to the observer (see the flowers at extreme left).
