'Gateway' is the most refined cultivar of Joe-Pye Weed, having huge inflorescences on a slightly more compact plant. Although Eupatorium generally prefer evenly moist soils with some afternoon shade, most species of Joe-Pye Weed can take full sun exposure if sufficient organic matter and supplemental moisture are present in the soil to sustain the daily afternoon stress period (as shown here).
