The species form of Purple Coneflower has reflexed ray flowers (or ÒpetalsÓ) at the perimeter of the domed-shaped disk flowers (or ÒconeÓ), giving it a Òbadminton birdieÓ (or shuttlecock) shape; modern culitvars, however, have wider petals that are held horizontally. The species form has pink-lavendar (rather than "purple") ray flowers, while modern cultivars may be pink-lavendar, pink-rose, or white. |
