Crataegus crusgalli
Cockspur Hawthorn

The flattop habit of Cockspur Hawthorn results from branching that is truly horizontal; in addition, the branches, while extremely dense, are usually left unthinned, as the numerous thorns make thinning via selective pruning a very difficult and potentially painful practice. However, the option now exists for planting a thornless variety, which does not have this liability.
