Plant ID on the App Store on iTunes

Marcia Angi

Description

This App will help Identify Plants in their Natural Environment. It is designed for novice and experts alike to help identify plants in your environment. Just choose from drop down boxes to describe the plant and get a list with pictures to help identify the plant. Once you click on the plant you will get valuable information about the plant. It can be used to find herbs or invasive plants or poison plants and is a great beginning to discovering plants, trees, mushrooms and other fungus. The app has a list of 50,000 plants to explore but the drop down menu helps to narrow your search and give you a list of pictures and options. The information page that you are taken to will allow you to see a further search or in some cases, give you a document fact sheet to tell you about the plant you have chosen. The plants in the data base are from all over but mostly in the United States and Canada.
It can tell you if a plant is endangered or invasive, poison or edible or even what soil it is grown in and if it can be transplanted from one area to next.

It is difficult to identify plants in the wild because many can look alike and one maybe poison and one edible so please do not make a decision based on the app without consulting an expert. This app is intended to get you started on your wilderness or backyard exploring on the exciting world of plants and nature. HAVE FUN.

Tree ID - TreeID with Fall Foliage on the App Store on iTunes

MEDL Mobile, Inc.

Description

Don’t judge a tree by its bark; get to know our natural neighbors with TreeID.

Reached #12 in Canada!

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

TreeID was created in MEDL Mobile’s App Incubator. The idea was submitted by Jason Siniscalchi, a PhD in Forest Resource Science from Connecticut who had done his graduate studies work at West Virginia University in Forest Management.

He wanted a way to share his research and interest in tree identification with the world for all nature enthusiasts. This app will also be helpful for allergy sufferers who can now easily identify the plants they are allergic to.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

TreeID allows the user to identify almost any tree in Northern America based on its:
• Name
• Scientific name
• Physical attributes (bark, leaf and fruit)
• Geographic location

-----------------------------------------

FOREST SCIENCE MADE EASY
Because many of us using the app may not know the proper name for identifying particular types of leaves or fruit, the app will walk the user through the various methods of tree identification. The app contains thousands of images, illustrations and notations. Yet with only a few clicks, the user should be able to identify any tree in the forest!

NEWEST FEATURES
• Improved tree identification functionality
• More than a hundred new trees
• Fifty “Fall Foliage” trees with Autumn colors

-----------------------------------------

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE UPDATING
TreeID has an extensive database of trees built right into the app. This way, it’s available to you at all times so you don’t have to worry about having no reception while trying to identify a tree.

Since our tree database is so large, this update does take a little bit of time to download. We recommend that you start your update while accessing a reliable internet connection, and make sure that you have roughly an hour of free time to stay connected before starting your download.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________

We are proud to call TreeID a Shiny MEDL Object. You can see all of them at www.medlmobile.com. And if you have an idea for an app that you’d like to see on the app store someday, visit www.appincubator.com.

Citrus Pests Key on the App Store on iTunes

United States Department of Agriculture-APHIS

Description

Citrus is one of the most important commercially grown agricultural products in the United States. Additionally, many citrus varieties are backyard crop plants, providing important sources of food at a local community level. As a result, citrus is one of the most economically important groups of plants. Numerous insect pests threaten the citrus industry and backyard citrus trees through feeding damage, while other pests vector diseases that are potentially lethal.

Citrus Pests Key is aimed primarily at extension agents, inspectors, and other plant professionals with access to a light microscope and hand lens. It is designed to help users determine which type of citrus insect pest they have encountered by featuring an interactive key coupled with illustrated, descriptive fact sheets for each pest. Citrus Pests Key is intended to be used as a screening aid. For definitive species identification, specimens should be sent to an expert for verification.

During the initial development of the key, an advisory committee developed a comprehensive list of over 300 pest and beneficial arthropods that needed to be considered for inclusion into the key. Since the key was designed and scoped as a basic screening aid to support survey and detection support, 51 total species from the comprehensive list were selected by the authors based on the following criteria:
- commonly found insect pests on cultivated citrus in the U.S. as determined by the Citrus Pest Advisory Committee,
- citrus insect pests that have been intercepted at U.S. ports but have not become established,
- insect pests that have entered the U.S. but have now been eradicated, and
- exotic insect pests of immediate concern to U.S. cultivated citrus.

Key authors: Sarahlynne Guerrero, Jennifer Weeks, Amanda Hodges, Kirk Martin, and Norman Leppla

This key is part of a complete Citrus Pests tool: http://idtools.org/id/citrus/pests/
